The Toy Museum is a memory institution where Lithuanian cultural heritage is collected, researched and popularized for visitors interested in toys, games and childhood topics. We strive to give our visitors the opportunity not only to look around and see the exhibits, but also to touch, explore, play with some of them and get to know the history of Lithuanian toys and games as interactively as possible. The principles of modern museology encourage the inclusion of as diverse age groups as possible in museum exhibitions and educational activities. However, although there are a lot of children visiting here, we are not a childcare facility.

We invite you to co-operate so that we all feel responsible for the safety of visitors and exhibits and a harmonious environment. Parents and their children must stay and explore together because:

  • Museum exhibits contain small parts, so children, especially the youngest ones, must be constantly supervised by their parents or accompanying adults;
  • The Museum presents EXHIBITS that do not comply with the 21st century EU requirements for manufactured toys. Therefore, you should always take care when exploring the exhibits and giving them to children.
  • Museum educators lead tours, educational activities, but do not take over the care of children from parents or adults who come with them. Families or groups of visitors with children explore the Museum's exhibitions and participate in activities together. Adults are not ACCOMPANYING persons, they are visitors who come together with children.
  • It is forbidden to throw and break exhibits, run, eat and drink in the exhibition spaces. If your child is thirsty or hungry, we invite you to return to the locker room so that there are no crumbles or spills in the exhibition spaces.

Give an invitation

Visitors coming to the Museum can buy tickets at the Toy Museum box office. Unmarked tickets are valid for 12 months. If you want to treat your friends with a visit to the Toy Museum, you can buy tickets at the box office or you can contact the Toy Museum administration at info@zaislumuziejus.lt and we will gladly offer you to buy an INVITATION, which you can present or send to your friends.

Donate a toy!

If you ever tidy up basements, attics, old homesteads, villages, and discover old toys, don’t rush to throw them away. Sometimes we keep toys for a long time as a happy childhood memory , but there comes a time when they take up the space that is needed for other things. It is really difficult and sometimes even uncomfortable to just throw away long- cherished toys. We encourage you to consider whether perhaps it is worth donating them to the Toy Museum instead. Here they would live on, and visitors would be extremely curious to see how the toys have changed or not changed and what were the toys that the children in our country played with a long time ago.

Jei nuspręstumėte žaislus padovanoti Žaislų muziejui, lauktume Jūsų laiško info@zaislumuziejus.lt arba susisiekite telefonu +37060400449.

FAQ

Why do you work from 2pm on weekdays?

Toy museum opens at 9 a.m., but the morning time until 2 p.m. is for groups in kindergartens, schools, and other educational institutions. As we can accommodate a maximum of 60 visitors at a time, these visits are recorded and the groups arrive at the agreed time. Educators lead classes for groups, we cannot pay attention to individual visitors at that time, introduce them to the museum. When classes visit a museum, the environment is very noisy and busy, so we need to segregate these groups of visitors as much as possible.

Is this museum only for children?

Although the objects of this museum are toys, games and childhood, it is not a traditional children's museum. The vision of the Toy Museum is to create an educational space where the visitors are invited to explore cultural heritage together with their children. Our goal is to promote the latest research of toys, games and childhood history and to include audiences in the cognitive process. We perceive the family as a special challenge as we need to match the needs and experiences of different age groups simultaneously. We are seeking to involve families into the learning process about Lithuanian toy history as the cultural heritage. Exploring our exhibits encourages them to understand childhood as a reflection of a certain historical period. We want to reveal the history of childhood through toys, childhood activities and attributes from the oldest times to the 20th century.

Our children has already been to Toy museum, is it worth for them to go to class again?

Toy museum presents several educational programs that educators choose according to the topics or relevant activities discussed in the kindergarten, school. So even children who have visited the museum more than once have the opportunity to learn about the history of toys, childhood everyday topics in various aspects or to participate with friends in toy workshops. Each visit is unique as the children’s experience, their knowledge and ability to discuss expands. Educational sessions become deeper and deeper, their course is determined by children's participation, answers, laughter or questions. However, it is very important that a kindergarten group or class visit to the museum helps children to develop other personal competencies that are necessary for a cohesive team. Upon arrival at a cultural institution, by participating in non-formal education activities, children learn to explore together, share exhibits, take care of a friend nearby, give up a place, help, wait, control actions. The children of the class involved in the activity experience strong cognitive emotions together, which greatly brings the class closer together and strengthens their communion. Thus, a child who does not participate with the class loses the impressions and experiences that the classes had that day.

What age is sufficient for this museum?

Research shows that what matters to children is important to their parents. Therefore, there is no age limit if parents are exploring together. Our exhibitions are designed for different age groups. Some things might be interesting for babies, other exhibits will attract the attention of older visitors. The older the visitor is, the deeper he perceives the topic of the museum. However, the most important thing is to have fun and learn new things, gain new experiences together with parents.

Do I need to register for a tour?

Why is it not allowed to leave a child in a museum?

The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display items of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public. Children's museums are institutions that provide exhibits and programs to stimulate informal learning experiences for children. Even these museums do not provide childcare service. Families attend museums together to explore new things and to experience new impressions. Toy Museum also follows this practice. The expositions are family-oriented, so we invite everyone to know about the fascinating everyday life of children. Children over the age of 14 are allowed to visit museums without adults.

How big is your collection?

Like many museums in the world, Toy Museum finds are much larger than the exhibits you can see in exhibition (usually it is because of the limited exposition area). Therefore, museums are organizing thematic exhibitions, changing exhibits, allowing some to rest, others to restore, and introducing new ones to visitors. Toys Museum holds over 4,000 original exhibits dating back from the end of 19th century till the end of the 20th century. The exposition also presents replicas of archaeological toys or their reconstructions.

Mūsų muziejuje svarbiausia ne eksponatų skaičius, o žaislų pasakojamos istorijos. Tyrinėdami skirtingus žaislus ir žaidimus, galime rekonstruoti vaikystės kasdienybę, jos sąsajas su suaugusiųjų pasauliu.

Why do parents have to buy tickets?

Parents who are interested in the history of everyday life, in the research of toys and childhood history, who like to spend their leisure time in cultural institutions, usually come with their children together. Therefore, adults in Toy Museum are not accompanying persons, but they are visitors who came with their children to cultural institutions, which presents toys, games, entertainment and childhood research.

Is it possible to celebrate a child's birthday at Toy museum?

We organize educations in which visitors participate on various occasions. Birthdays are no exception either, but since we don’t have a separate space for a feast, after education and a visit, visitors travel further afield to the city’s pizzerias, cafes, during summer time to the Bernardinai Garden.

Is there a possibility to have a snack in the museum's exposition?

You will find such a ban in every museum. Larger museums have the opportunity to offer visitors rest and refreshment in separate spaces - cafes, but food and drink are prohibited in the exhibition spaces for several reasons: firstly, such hygiene requirements apply to the safety of exhibits, secondly - to avoid food spills or spills visitors may get smeared, slipped, and injured unnoticed.
