The theme of old Lithuanian toys in Kyiv
On 2 October 2024, the exhibition "Lithuanian Toys of the Middle Ages" by the Toy Museum in Vilnius was opened at the Kyiv State Toy Museum. This exhibition and the exhibition of Ukrainian folk toys that opened in Vilnius a few weeks ago are the first result of the two museums' acquaintance and first cooperation. On the initiative of Tomas Ivanauskas, the Cultural Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania in Ukraine and Sakartvelo, the museums exchanged exhibitions in order to present to their visitors toys that would be unique and unseen, but at the same time present the history and culture of Lithuania and Ukraine.
The exhibition opened in Kyjiv and features replicas of archaeological toys, the originals of which have been found in Lithuania during 30 years of archaeological excavations and are preserved in eleven Lithuanian museums. The copies and reconstructions present all the material we know so far about Lithuania's oldest toys, which date back to the late Middle Ages. The Vilnius Toy Museum hopes that this exhibition will be of interest to visitors to the Kyiv Toy Museum. We invite you not only to look at these replicas, but also to try them out.
