On January 20, we open a new exhibition presenting unique, hand-crocheted dolls by Jūratė Dineikaitė. The exhibition features 30 original works, created around 1990. Each doll is one of a kind, with its own distinct character.
Lėlių autorė – Jūratė Dineikaitė (g. 1936). Ji – pirmosios Lietuvoje ir visoje Sovietų Sąjungoje merginų roko grupės „Bitės“ įkūrėja. Muzikė, aranžuotoja, drąsi kūrėja.
The dolls were created during a time of scarcity. Yarn and materials were hard to obtain. The artist unraveled old clothes, sweaters, and socks, collecting leftover threads and using them to create the dolls’ clothing, lacework, hats, and details. She improvised, making use of every single strand. These handmade works are filled with imagination, humor, and creative freedom. Crocheting the dolls became a form of self-expression, meditation, and a way to escape everyday worries.
We thank journalist Gerda Prancūzevičienė for her meaningful contribution to the preparation of this exhibition.
